Car Key Cutting in Staffordshire
Ben Astle of AutoVault cuts car keys at your car across Staffordshire, from Uttoxeter to Stoke-on-Trent, with standard and laser cut blades cut to the exact profile of your lock. He carries the programming equipment too, so a modern key is cut and programmed in the same visit, with no call-out fee.
How Much Does Car Key Cutting Cost in Staffordshire?
Car key cutting in Staffordshire starts from ยฃ50 in 2026 for a blade cut on its own, from ยฃ145 for a spare key cut and programmed while a working key is there, and from ยฃ180 for a key cut to code when every key is lost. Ben confirms the full price from the registration before he travels, and there is no call-out fee.
Three things set the exact figure. The blade type decides the cutter, because a laser cut blade takes longer than a standard edge cut, the key type decides whether a chip and remote have to be programmed as well, and having a working key to copy from keeps the job short.
A blade cut on its own fits a classic car with a mechanical key, or a key blank you already have. On almost every car built since 1998 the cut key also has to be programmed before the engine will start, and most spare keys are cut and programmed in under 30 minutes.
Car key cutting prices, 2026
| Job | When it applies | From |
|---|---|---|
| Blade cut only | Classic car key, mechanical key or a key blank you already have | ยฃ50 |
| Key cut elsewhere, programmed | The blade turns the lock but the engine will not start | ยฃ60 |
| Spare key cut and programmed | A working key is at the car | ยฃ145 |
| Keyless smart key with blade | Emergency blade cut, smart key programmed | ยฃ150 |
| Key cut to code | No working key, the cuts are read from the lock or the key code | ยฃ180 |
Call or WhatsApp Ben with your registration, and he confirms what is needed and the price before he comes to you.
How Is a Car Key Cut to Fit Your Car?
Get the cut right and the key turns smoothly. Get it wrong by a fraction of a millimetre and it will not turn at all, or it turns stiffly and wears the lock over time. For any car with an immobiliser, a cut key still needs car key programming before the engine will start, which is why Ben carries both the cutter and the programming tools to every job.
Three Ways a New Blade Is Cut
Copied From Your Key
The cuts are read from your working key and reproduced on a new blade. It is the quickest route and the usual one for a spare key.
Cut to Code
Every lock has a key code that describes its cuts. With no key left, the code or the cuts read from the lock let a new blade be cut without the original.
Decoded From the Lock
When there is no code to work from, the wafers inside the door lock are read to find the depth of each cut, then the blade is cut to match.
Two Blade Types Ben Cuts
Standard Edge Cut Blades
The cuts run along the edges of the blade as a pattern of notches that sets the lock wafers. Found on many older cars, vans and most non European makes.
Laser Cut Blades
A groove is milled down the face of the blade instead of the edge. Found on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen and many other European makes, and cut on a specialist rotary cutter that most key shops do not have.
When Is Cutting Alone Enough?
| Key type | Cutting | Programming | Result after cutting only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical key with no chip, most cars before 1998 | Yes | No | Fully working key |
| Transponder key | Yes | Yes | Turns the lock, the engine will not start |
| Remote key or flip key | Yes | Yes, with remote pairing | Turns the lock, the engine will not start, the remote does nothing |
| Laser cut high security key | Yes, on a specialist cutter | Yes | Turns the lock, the engine will not start |
| Keyless smart key | Emergency blade only | Yes | Opens the door with the blade, the car will not start |
๐ Had a Key Cut but the Engine Will Not Start?
If your new key turns smoothly in the ignition but the car will not fire, or an immobiliser warning light shows on the dashboard, the key has been cut without being programmed. That is a standalone programming job from ยฃ60, and Ben can often finish it on site the same day.
How Ben Supplied a Genuine Spare Key for a 2025 Land Rover Defender in Hollington
A genuine spare smart key supplied and programmed at the car in Hollington, while the original key still worked.

Land Rover Defender 2025
The owner of a 2025 Land Rover Defender in Hollington wanted a genuine spare key while the original still worked. Ben supplied the genuine key and programmed it to the car, with the original key kept working alongside it.
A smart key like the Defender's still carries an emergency blade inside it, which opens the driver's door if the key battery goes flat, and that blade is cut to the lock like any other key. Hollington sits in the Staffordshire Moorlands between Cheadle and Uttoxeter, a short drive from Ben's base.
Can You Get a Car Key Cut at a Key Shop?
Yes, for the blade, but on a modern car that is only half the job. High street key shops cut blades, and many cannot programme a transponder or cut a laser blade, so for any car built in the last 25 years the key they hand over turns the lock but will not start the engine. The owner then pays a second business to programme it.
Cut and Programmed in One Visit
Blade Cut, Programming Often Not Available
A main dealer can supply a key too, but it usually needs the car brought in and the key ordered first. For any car with an immobiliser, which is almost every car on UK roads since 1998, a blade cut without the programming step is an unfinished job, so the advantage of a mobile auto locksmith is both steps in one visit at the car.
When Is Key Cutting Part of a Bigger Job?
Cutting is one step in most key jobs. These six situations cover what else is usually needed alongside it.
Replacement Key, Cut and Programmed
The most common combined job. A new key is cut to the blade profile and programmed to the immobiliser in one visit, which is a car key replacement from start to finish.
Spare Key, Cut and Programmed
A second working key, with the blade copied from the original and the chip added to the list of keys the car accepts. The original keeps working.
Key Blank Bought, Needs Cutting
If you already have a key blank or an uncut key, Ben cuts the blade on site without the full replacement service, and programmes it too if the car needs it.
Laser Cut Key for a European Car
BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen and many other European makes use laser cut blades, which need the specialist cutter Ben carries rather than a shop machine.
Broken Blade, New Key Needed
A snapped blade needs a new key cut, and often the broken piece removed first. Ben handles broken key extraction at the same visit when the piece is stuck in the lock.
Classic Car With No Chip
Older cars often use a mechanical key with no transponder. Cutting the blade correctly is usually the whole job, with no programming step.

AutoVault came to produce a spare key for my vehicle and programme a lost one out of the system. The service was exceptional and communication was excellent throughout. I was called before arrival (on time) and he did a stellar job. My vehicle posed several issues with the programming process and he went above and beyond to resolve this for me, perservering and having to come back the next day after some additional time and work was needed to complete the job which he did successfully. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, and a top guy! I cannot recommend this company highly enough. I will definitely use again in future.Posted on Google![]()

We were locked out our car at Alton Towers and had no other option but to Google for car locksmith. We tried the first one that came up and so glad we did! They came to us within 20 minutes, got us in the car quickly with no damage at all done to the car. Would 100% recommend if you are in the area. I have a courtesy car and the key fob stopped working. The garage were shut for the whole weekend and I needed the use of a car. Ben was amazing and went over and beyond. He was very patient with me trying to identify where the emergency override was. . He then offered to come out and he arrived within 15 minutes. Bizarrely the key fob started to work as he pulled up. He still checked the fobs battery for me and showed me where the override on the car was. He refused to charge me the agreed call out charge. In fact he refused to charge me at all. If I could have given him 10 stars I would .Very knowledgeable and a gentleman. If you ever get locked out of your car definitely give Ben a callPosted on Google![]()
