PATS and KeyFree Explained
Ford has used its own-branded immobiliser and keyless entry systems across the range for decades, and knowing which one your vehicle has changes exactly how a lost-key or all-keys-lost job is approached.
🔐 PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System)
Ford's transponder-based immobiliser, standard across virtually every Ford built in the last two decades. A transponder chip in the key communicates with the PCM to authorise engine start — without a correctly programmed transponder, the engine will crank but not run.
📶 KeyFree Keyless Entry
Ford's proximity key system, fitted to most current Puma, Kuga and Ranger models and some later Focus and Fiesta variants. The key communicates wirelessly with the vehicle, allowing keyless locking, unlocking and push-button start.
