Automotive Module Services Staffordshire
BCM corruption, EEPROM repair, module-level key programming and electronic fault diagnosis — the work that goes beyond a standard auto locksmith callout, resolved on-site across Staffordshire.
When a Key or Immobiliser Fault Has a Module at the Root of It
Most auto locksmith work sits at the OBD level — programming a key, unlocking a vehicle, replacing a barrel. But some faults run deeper. A body control module (BCM) that has corrupted its EEPROM data. An immobiliser that cannot be accessed via OBD because the security gateway has locked it out. A Jaguar or Land Rover that needs genuine JLR SDD configuration after a module replacement. These are the faults that defeat standard equipment and require a different approach.
Ben carries the specialist tools to work at the module level — reading and writing EEPROM data directly from the chip, using ACDP for module-bypassed key programming on BMW and Mercedes, and running JLR SDD (the genuine Jaguar Land Rover diagnostic software) for platform-specific configuration work on Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
This service covers the diagnostic and electronic work that sits between standard auto locksmith programming and a full main dealer appointment. It is not a replacement for complex mechanical repair, but it handles the electronic fault layer that often blocks recovery by other means.
What Automotive Module Work Actually Involves
BCM EEPROM Reading and Writing
The Body Control Module (BCM) manages central locking, lighting, windows, immobiliser communication and dozens of other vehicle functions. When the BCM's EEPROM memory chip is corrupted — often caused by a flat battery, incorrect module programming or a battery removal — the vehicle can lose immobiliser authorisation, key recognition, or basic function. Ben can read the corrupted EEPROM data directly from the chip, repair or restore it, and rewrite it without replacing the entire module.
When needed: all lights on, central locking failed, immobiliser not recognising any key despite correct transponder chip.
Module-Level Key Programming (ACDP)
Some vehicles — particularly BMW post-2015 and certain Mercedes platforms — encrypt their immobiliser data in a way that prevents OBD-level key programming. The key data has to be read from the CAS, FEM or BDC module directly, decrypted, and the new key written back. ACDP connects at the module level to handle this without removing the module from the vehicle.
When needed: all-keys-lost on BMW CAS4/FEM/BDC, Mercedes EIS with anti-scan lockout, or any platform where OBD programming has been blocked.
JLR SDD Diagnostics and Configuration
JLR SDD is the genuine Jaguar Land Rover diagnostic platform — the same software used by franchised JLR dealers. It is required for module configuration, variant coding, Bluetooth and key learning on Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles where third-party tools lack the platform-specific commands. Ben carries JLR SDD and can run it at the vehicle location.
When needed: module replacement on Discovery or Range Rover requiring SDD configuration, JLR platform key learning, BCM or BECM variant coding.
EEPROM and MCU Programming (MultiProg)
MultiProg handles direct chip-level reading and writing of EEPROM and microcontroller (MCU) data — used where the module cannot be accessed via OBD or ACDP adapter, and the data needs to be read or written at the component level. This covers instrument clusters, BCMs, and dashboard modules where immobiliser data is stored alongside mileage and configuration data.
When needed: module replacement without matching data, immobiliser data extraction for recovery purposes, mileage correction as part of a legitimate module swap.
Immobiliser Bypass and Fault Recovery
When an immobiliser system has entered a locked or fault state — sometimes caused by a failed key programming attempt, a module fault, or battery events — it may refuse all further programming until reset. Ben can access the immobiliser's security data at the module level to clear fault states and restore the system to a programmable condition.
When needed: immobiliser locked out after failed OBD programming attempt, module showing security fault codes, vehicle completely unresponsive to standard key programming.
Steering Lock Module Repair (ELV/ESL)
Mercedes-Benz W204 C-Class, W212 E-Class and some W164 ML-Class vehicles use an Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) module that fails in a locked position — preventing ignition and steering function. Ben can repair or emulate the ESL module on-site, bypassing the failure without a full steering column replacement.
When needed: Mercedes steering lock fault, ELV warning light, steering wheel locked solid despite battery connected, ignition will not turn.
Not all of these are available for every vehicle — coverage depends on the specific make, model and platform. Call or WhatsApp with your vehicle details and the fault you are experiencing, and Ben will confirm what is possible before attending.

Tools That Reach Module Level
Six specialist tools — selected because module-level work requires the right adapter and software, not just a generic diagnostic scanner.
ACDP (All Modules)
Module-level key programming and EEPROM reading for BMW (CAS1-4, FEM, BDC), Mercedes (EIS, EZS), and other high-security platforms where OBD access is blocked or insufficient.
JLR SDD
Genuine Jaguar Land Rover diagnostic platform — the same software used by JLR dealers for module coding, key learning, variant configuration and platform-specific diagnostics on Jaguar and Range Rover.
MultiProg
Chip-level EEPROM and MCU programmer. Reads and writes data directly from memory chips on BCMs, instrument clusters and other modules — used where adapter-based access is not available.
AUTEL IM Series
OBD-level key programming and immobiliser diagnostics for the majority of platforms. First-stage tool — module-level tools are used where AUTEL identifies a deeper fault requiring chip access.
Xhorse Key Tool Plus
Transponder generation and remote programming. Covers key blank generation for platforms where the correct chip needs to be loaded from a database rather than cloned.
Truecode / OSCA
PIN code calculation and immobiliser seed/key generation for platforms requiring security codes not available via standard OBD. Used in conjunction with ACDP and AUTEL for complete coverage.
Jaguar XF 2014 — BCM Corruption, Kidsgrove Stoke-on-Trent
A complex module-level repair completed on-site — 3 to 4 hours, soldering required.

Jaguar XF 2014
A customer in Kidsgrove had removed the battery on their Jaguar XF — a routine task that on this platform caused both the BCM and BCMB (the secondary body control module) to suffer EEPROM data corruption. The vehicle lost all key recognition, central locking and basic function.
This job required a combination of hardware soldering, EEPROM data repair and JLR SDD platform reconfiguration — it could not be resolved by any standard auto locksmith or generic diagnostic tool. See Jaguar coverage and Kidsgrove.
Six Situations Where Module Work May Be the Answer
Standard tools have limits. These are the situations where reaching for module-level access is often the right next step.
Standard Programming Has Failed
A locksmith or dealer has already attempted OBD-level key programming and the vehicle refused to accept any keys. This usually means the immobiliser is in a locked or corrupted state that requires module-level access to resolve.
Battery Removal Caused Loss of Function
Removing or replacing the battery on certain platforms — particularly Jaguar, Land Rover and some BMW models — can cause EEPROM corruption in the BCM or immobiliser module. Symptoms include loss of key recognition, central locking failure and immobiliser fault codes.
Module Replaced Without Data Transfer
When a BCM, ECU or instrument cluster is replaced with a second-hand unit, the replacement module carries its own stored data — including a different immobiliser profile. The vehicle needs the data from the original module written into the replacement for correct function.
Dealer Quoted for Full Module Replacement
A main dealer diagnosis suggesting full module replacement may have a less expensive resolution if the module itself is functional but its EEPROM data is corrupted. EEPROM repair can restore a module that diagnosis shows as faulty to full working condition.
Mercedes Steering Lock Fault
Mercedes W204 and W212 ESL failures present as a locked steering column with ignition refusal — often misdiagnosed as an ignition barrel fault. The ESL module itself has failed in the locked position and needs repair or emulation rather than barrel work.
JLR Variant Coding or Key Relearn Needed
Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles require JLR SDD for certain module coding operations that third-party tools cannot perform. This includes key relearning after module replacement, BECM variant coding and some platform-specific calibration tasks.
The Gap Between a Locksmith and a Dealer — Closed On-Site
Module-level work is the territory where most auto locksmiths stop and most dealers charge for a full module replacement. Ben sits in the space between — carrying the tools and knowledge to resolve faults at the data level before recommending hardware replacement.
EEPROM Repair Before Module Replacement
A corrupted BCM is not always a dead BCM. EEPROM data repair is attempted before recommending replacement — saving significant cost where the module hardware is intact.
JLR SDD On-Site
Genuine Jaguar Land Rover diagnostic software available at the vehicle, not just at a franchised dealer. Covers JLR-specific module coding and key learning that third-party tools cannot perform.
Pre-Attendance Confirmation
Module work varies considerably by platform and fault. Ben discusses the symptoms and vehicle before attending to confirm what is achievable and avoid a wasted visit.
DBS Checked & Insured
Current DBS check and £5M public liability insurance. SERMI registration in progress — vehicle security access is increasingly moving toward SERMI standards. Standards via the Master Locksmiths Association.
What Staffordshire Customers Say
EXCELLENT Based on 65 reviews Posted on Google Matt KTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. AutoVault came to produce a spare key for my vehicle and programme a lost one out of the system. The service was exceptional and communication was excellent throughout. I was called before arrival (on time) and he did a stellar job. My vehicle posed several issues with the programming process and he went above and beyond to resolve this for me, perservering and having to come back the next day after some additional time and work was needed to complete the job which he did successfully. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, and a top guy! I cannot recommend this company highly enough. I will definitely use again in future.Posted on Google Nigel BirchTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We are from Scotland so wasn't sure who to use but glad we used these guys.Posted on Google Helena BeareTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have a courtesy car and the key fob stopped working. The garage were shut for the whole weekend and I needed the use of a car. Ben was amazing and went over and beyond. He was very patient with me trying to identify where the emergency override was. . He then offered to come out and he arrived within 15 minutes. Bizarrely the key fob started to work as he pulled up. He still checked the fobs battery for me and showed me where the override on the car was. He refused to charge me the agreed call out charge. In fact he refused to charge me at all. If I could have given him 10 stars I would .Very knowledgeable and a gentleman.
