Three Generations of BMW Security, One Specialist

BMW has changed its key and immobiliser architecture significantly over the years, and knowing which system your specific model uses is the starting point for any key or lock job. Older BMWs, roughly up to the mid-2000s, use EWS (Elektronische Wegfahrsperre). Models from the mid-2000s through the early 2010s moved to CAS (Car Access System), progressing through CAS1 to CAS4+ across successive generations with increasing security. Current-generation BMWs, from around the mid-2010s onward, use FEM (Front Electronic Module) or BDC (Body Domain Controller) depending on model.

Most recent and current BMWs also feature Comfort Access — BMW's keyless entry system — and select higher-end models have used the distinctive Display Key, a key fob with its own small screen. Ben carries the diagnostic equipment to work across all three generations, from classic E-series models through to current G-series BMWs.

Every AutoVault service is available for BMW — car key replacement, lost car keys, emergency vehicle unlocking, and full commercial vehicle coverage where applicable.

BMW Lost Car Keys

BMW Emergency Vehicle Unlocking

Full details & FAQs →

BMW Spare Car Keys

A spare key cut and programmed to your BMW's security system before you need it costs a fraction of an emergency replacement — particularly worth doing given how much more involved an all-keys-lost job becomes on CAS or FEM/BDC-equipped models.

BMW Key Programming

If a BMW key turns the ignition but the engine won't start, or a Comfort Access key won't authorise start-up, the key has likely lost its link to EWS, CAS or FEM/BDC. Ben carries dedicated BMW programming equipment to resolve this on-site.

Full details & FAQs →
✂️

BMW Key Cutting

Standard and laser-cut key blades for BMW models, cut precisely on-site. Since every modern BMW has an immobiliser fitted, Ben also carries the equipment to programme the key to your specific system in the same visit.

BMW Transponder Keys

BMW has used several transponder and key-fob architectures across EWS, CAS and FEM/BDC generations. Ben identifies the correct type for your specific BMW and programmes it on-site, rather than guessing.

🔋

BMW Key Fob Repairs

Comfort Access or remote locking stopped working on your BMW but the key still starts the car? Often a flat battery or lost pairing rather than a full fob fault — including on Display Key models, which have their own internal battery separate from the key blade.

Full details & FAQs →
🔩

BMW Broken Key Extraction

A snapped key in a BMW door lock or ignition barrel is extracted using specialist tools, without drilling out the lock where avoidable — a familiar fault on higher-mileage 1 Series, 3 Series and 5 Series models after years of daily use.

Full details & FAQs →
⚙️

BMW Ignition Repair & Replacement

Stiff, seized or completely dead ignition on a BMW — Ben diagnoses whether it's mechanical wafer wear or an EWS/CAS-related electrical fault before recommending a repair or replacement, keeping your existing key wherever the barrel allows it.

BMW Automotive Module Services

For faults beyond a standard key or ignition job — CAS or FEM/BDC module data corruption, BCM coding after a repair, or immobiliser faults standard tools can't resolve — Ben carries the module-level equipment BMW vehicles specifically require.

How BMW Key Security Has Evolved

EWS, CAS and FEM/BDC Explained

BMW's key and immobiliser system has gone through three major architectural generations, and correctly identifying which one your vehicle uses is the first step in any key or lock job.

🔐 EWS

Elektronische Wegfahrsperre — BMW's original electronic immobiliser, fitted to models roughly up to the mid-2000s. A transponder in the key communicates with the EWS module to authorise engine start.

🗝️ CAS (CAS1–CAS4+)

Car Access System — introduced from the mid-2000s, progressing through several generations with increasing encryption and security. Later CAS versions are significantly more involved to work with than early ones.

📟 FEM / BDC

Front Electronic Module and Body Domain Controller — BMW's current-generation architecture from around the mid-2010s onward, replacing CAS with a more integrated, network-based approach to vehicle access and security.

🔍 Comfort Access & Display Key

Comfort Access is BMW's keyless entry and start system, standard or optional across most current models. Certain higher-end BMWs, including some 7 Series and 5 Series models, have also used the Display Key — a key fob with its own small screen showing vehicle status. The Display Key has its own separate internal battery in addition to the standard key battery, which is worth knowing if the screen stops working but the key still functions normally.
