Ford Transit and Custom Key Replacement in Staffordshire
AutoVault replaces Ford Transit and Transit Custom keys at the van across Staffordshire, from a spare flip key for a Mk8 Transit to a new key when every key has been lost. Ben Astle is a mobile commercial auto locksmith based in Uttoxeter, so the key is cut and programmed where the van is parked, with no tow truck and no wait for a Ford dealer.
- Spare Ford Transit keys cut and programmed while one working key is left.
- All keys lost on the Transit and Transit Custom, with a new key made at the van.
- Transit key programming, key cutting and key fob repair on site, from the Mk6 to the Mk8 and the Transit Custom.
- No call-out fee and a 30 minute average response across Staffordshire.
Ben is DBS checked, holds ยฃ5 million public liability insurance and is SERMI approved, and every price is confirmed before he travels.
Based in Uttoxeter and covering all of Staffordshire, Ben reaches most job sites, yards and roadsides in about 30 minutes.
Ben holds a current DBS check and ยฃ5 million public liability insurance for every van job.

How Much Does a Ford Transit Key Replacement Cost?
A Ford Transit key replacement in 2026 starts from ยฃ155 for a spare key when one working key is left, and from ยฃ180 when every key has been lost, with the year and the key type setting the exact figure. Ben gives a fixed price for your van before he travels, and there is no call-out fee.
The price of a Transit key depends on four things.
- The van generation. A Mk6 or Mk7 transponder key costs less than the high security flip key of the Mk8 Transit and the Transit Custom.
- The key type. A remote flip key costs less than the keyless smart key of the Transit Custom built from 2023.
- A working key or none. A spare is added with a working key present. With no key left, the lock is decoded and the immobiliser accepts a new key from scratch, which takes longer.
- Repair or replace. A dead battery, a worn button or a broken case can often be repaired for far less than a new key.
Ford car keys and Transit van keys are priced on the same rules, by the generation of the vehicle and the type of key, so a Transit and a Focus of the same age sit close together. Ben programmes Ford car keys for the Fiesta, Focus and Kuga on the same fixed price terms.
A Ford dealer usually orders the key and asks for the van to be brought in, with a tow when no key is left, which can mean days off the road and a higher price. A mobile job at the van avoids both.
Send the registration and the place of the van, and Ben will confirm the key type and the price before he travels.
Which Key Does Your Ford Transit or Transit Custom Use?
A Ford Transit uses one of four kinds of key, and the generation of the van decides which one. Every Transit key carries a transponder chip that the PATS immobiliser reads before the engine will start.
| Van | Years | Key | Chip | When every key is lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mk6 Transit | 2000 to 2006 | Bladed transponder key, separate remote on some vans | ID60, or ID63 on later vans | A key cut to the lock and programmed at the van |
| Mk7 Transit | 2006 to 2013 | Remote key with a fixed blade | ID63 | A key cut to the lock and programmed at the van |
| Mk8 Transit | 2013 onwards, updated in 2020 | Remote flip key with a high security blade, keyless key on some trims | ID63 80 bit on earlier vans, Hitag Pro ID49 on later vans | The lock decoded, then a key cut and programmed at the van |
| Transit Custom, first generation | 2012 to 2023 | Remote flip key with a high security blade | ID63 80 bit on earlier vans, Hitag Pro ID49 on later vans | The lock decoded, then a key cut and programmed at the van |
| Transit Custom, second generation, including the PHEV and E-Transit Custom | 2023 onwards | Keyless smart key with push button start | Smart key chip, checked by registration | A new smart key, confirmed with Ben before he travels |
In 2026 most Transits on Staffordshire job sites are Mk8 vans and first generation Customs between 3 and 13 years old, and many came from a lease or a used sale with only one key. The newest Custom vans use a smart key that stays in the pocket, while the oldest Mk6 and Mk7 vans now need as much care at the ignition as at the key.
How Is a Ford Transit Key Programmed?
Spare Key, One Working Key Left
The spare is cut from the working key or from the key code, programmed to PATS through the OBD port and tested at the van. A spare usually takes about 30 minutes, and the working key keeps working.
All Keys Lost, No Key Left
When keys are lost with no spare, Ben opens the van without damage, decodes the lock to read the cuts, cuts a new blade and programmes the key to PATS. Ford does not hold a key code for every van, so decoding the lock is often the only route. The job usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and the lost keys are erased so they no longer start the van.
Ben checks proof of ownership before any key is programmed. The V5C log book with matching photo ID is the usual proof, and the VIN on the dashboard by the windscreen confirms the van. Every working key should be at the van on the day, because a key that is not present can stop working once a new key is added.
The Ford Transit ignition barrel wears with daily use. A van that has its key turned a dozen times a day wears the wafers inside the barrel until the key feels stiff, sticks or will not turn, and a barrel looked at before it seizes avoids a breakdown on top of a key job.

How the Ashbourne Transit Spare Key Was Added in 30 Minutes
A business owner near Ashbourne had just bought a 2022 Ford Transit with one key and wanted a spare programmed before he needed it. Ben programmed a second flip key at the customer's location in 30 minutes, and the van did not have to go anywhere.
Mobile Locksmith, Ford Dealer or Recovery for a Transit Key?
A Transit with no working key has three realistic routes, which are a mobile locksmith, a Ford dealer or recovery to a dealer, and the difference in time off the road is larger than the difference in price.
| Factor | AutoVault | Ford dealer | Recovery and dealer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comes to the van | Yes | No | Recovery truck only |
| Response | About 30 minutes on average | An appointment, often days away | Hours for recovery, then days |
| Van off the road | Under an hour for most jobs | One to three days or more | Two to five days or more |
| Recovery truck needed | No | Only when no key is left | Yes, at extra cost |
| Key supplied | Genuine or quality aftermarket | Genuine only | Genuine only |
| Call-out fee | None | Not applicable | Recovery charge |
For a Transit operator, the cost that matters most is the working hours lost while the van waits for a dealer slot, not the price of the key. A mobile visit settles most Transit key faults in the time a dealer takes to book the job.
What Else Should Transit Owners Know About Their Van Keys?
Ford Transit and Custom vans make up most of the work Ben does as a commercial auto locksmith, alongside Sprinter and Vivaro vans for trades and fleets. The same owners ask the questions below, from dead key fobs to keys bought online.
Why Has My Transit Key Fob Stopped Working?
On many 2014 and newer Transits, your remote key has a sealed rechargeable battery that charges while the van is driven, and it often fails after about three years. Ben fixes it by fitting a new battery or moving the circuit board into a new case, which costs far less than a new key. Your van still starts with a dead remote, because the transponder chip needs no battery.
Is the Ignition Barrel to Blame When a Transit Key Will Not Turn?
Yes, when the key goes in but feels stiff or will not turn, the barrel is usually the fault rather than the key. On a 2018 van in Stone, Ben replaced the Ford Transit ignition barrel after it seized on a job site, and the van ran again in 40 minutes with the same key.
Can a Transit Key Bought Online Be Programmed?
Yes, when it matches the blade and chip of your Transit and Ben checks it before you buy. Keys from AliExpress and eBay are often a shell only, with no chip or circuit board inside, and a cheap complete key can fail to programme. Send Ben the listing and the registration, and he will say whether it will work.
Why Did Ford Change the Transit Key in 2014?
When the fourth generation Ford Transit reached UK roads, Ford moved it to a high security key because the older Mk7 lock was easy to pick. Ford does not keep a central key code record for every van, so a new key is often cut by decoding the lock, and Ben can pass the key number on for the future.
Which Areas Does Ben Cover for Transit Keys?
Ben is based in Uttoxeter and covers the whole of Staffordshire, including Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Stone and Burton upon Trent, and the Ashbourne side of the Derbyshire border. The average response is about 30 minutes, and the price terms are the same everywhere.
How Can You Stop a Key Problem Taking the Van Off the Road?
Four steps prevent most Transit key emergencies, and each one costs far less than a recovery.
Get a spare key programmed now.
One key on a Transit that covers 50,000 miles a year is a single point of failure, and a spare costs far less than an all keys lost job.
Watch the ignition for stiffness.
A key that needs more force than usual to turn is a warning sign, and worn wafers are cheaper to fix before the barrel seizes.
Keep the spare apart from the main key.
A spare in the same bag as the main key is lost with it, so keep it at the depot or with another driver.
Save Ben's number in your phone.

AutoVault came to produce a spare key for my vehicle and programme a lost one out of the system. The service was exceptional and communication was excellent throughout. I was called before arrival (on time) and he did a stellar job. My vehicle posed several issues with the programming process and he went above and beyond to resolve this for me, perservering and having to come back the next day after some additional time and work was needed to complete the job which he did successfully. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, and a top guy! I cannot recommend this company highly enough. I will definitely use again in future.Posted on Google![]()

I have a courtesy car and the key fob stopped working. The garage were shut for the whole weekend and I needed the use of a car. Ben was amazing and went over and beyond. He was very patient with me trying to identify where the emergency override was. . He then offered to come out and he arrived within 15 minutes. Bizarrely the key fob started to work as he pulled up. He still checked the fobs battery for me and showed me where the override on the car was. He refused to charge me the agreed call out charge. In fact he refused to charge me at all. If I could have given him 10 stars I would .Very knowledgeable and a gentleman. If you ever get locked out of your car definitely give Ben a callPosted on Google![]()
