What This Service Covers

Remote Locking Fault vs Immobiliser Fault — Two Very Different Problems

A key fob has two separate functions built into the same piece of plastic. The transponder chip communicates with the vehicle's immobiliser to authorise the engine to start. The remote transmitter sends a radio frequency signal to the central locking module so the doors lock and unlock at the press of a button.

These two systems are independent. When the remote stops working but the key still starts the car, the immobiliser and transponder are fine — the fault is in the remote transmitter side. This is a key fob repair, not a key replacement. Replacing the entire key when only the remote has failed is unnecessary and significantly more expensive than it needs to be.

Ben diagnoses the specific fault first — battery, pairing loss, casing damage, button wear, or component failure — before recommending the right fix. Most key fob issues are resolved without needing to replace the entire key.

Fault Diagnosis

Six Common Key Fob Faults — and How Each Is Resolved

Before replacing a fob entirely, it is worth understanding what has actually failed. Most key fob problems have a specific cause and a targeted fix that costs less than a full replacement.

🔋

Flat or Weak Battery

The most common cause by far. Key fob batteries — usually CR2032 or CR2025 — typically last 2 to 3 years. A weak battery may reduce range before failing completely. Buttons sometimes work at very close range but not at normal distance.

→ Fix: Battery replacement. Usually resolves the issue entirely.
📡

Remote Lost Pairing

The fob has lost its radio frequency pairing with the vehicle's central locking module. Can happen after a battery change (some vehicles lose sync when power is interrupted), a software update, or replacement of the BCM or central locking module.

→ Fix: Remote re-pairing procedure for the specific make and model.
💧

Water or Moisture Damage

A fob dropped in water, left in a pocket through a wash, or repeatedly exposed to rain can corrode the internal circuit board. Symptoms vary from intermittent response to complete failure of some or all buttons.

→ Fix: Internal cleaning, drying and assessment. Replacement circuit board or new fob may be needed if corrosion is severe.
💥

Physical Damage — Cracked Casing

A cracked or broken fob shell often damages the internal rubber button contacts or the PCB beneath. Individual buttons may stop working even when others continue functioning.

→ Fix: Casing replacement or new fob with transponder transfer where possible.
⌨️

Worn Button Contacts

Heavy daily use wears the carbon contacts on the rubber button pad. A button that requires increasing pressure, or only works at certain angles, usually has worn contacts rather than a circuit fault.

→ Fix: Button pad replacement or contact repair.
📶

Interference or Range Issues

Nearby radio frequency sources — some car parks, certain buildings, phone masts — can temporarily block the fob signal. If the problem is location-specific and clears elsewhere, this is the likely cause rather than a fob fault.

→ Diagnosis: If problem is consistent regardless of location, a fob or pairing issue is more likely.

🔍 Check This Before Calling

  • Try a battery replacement first — CR2032 batteries cost under £2 from any supermarket or pharmacy. If the fob starts working afterwards, problem solved.
  • Test at different distances and locations — if it works at close range but not further away, a weak battery is likely. If it fails everywhere consistently, the fault is deeper.
  • Check if the key still starts the car — if yes, the transponder is fine and the fault is only with the remote. If no, that is a different fault — see Key Programming.
  • Try any spare fob you have — if the spare works, the primary fob has failed. If neither works, the fault may be in the vehicle's central locking receiver rather than the fob.

Repair vs Replace

When to Repair a Fob — and When a Replacement Makes More Sense

The right answer depends entirely on what has failed. A flat battery is a two-minute fix. Severe water corrosion that has destroyed the circuit board is not repairable — a new fob is needed. Most situations fall somewhere between these extremes.

✅ Repair — Usually Sufficient

Fault Is in the Fob Itself

Where a full fob replacement is needed, Ben can supply, cut and program a new one in a single visit — combining the blade cutting, transponder programming and remote pairing steps. See Car Key Replacement for the full replacement service.

Remote Re-Pairing

Why a Working Fob Sometimes Stops Being Recognised

The remote function of a key fob communicates with the vehicle's central locking receiver on a specific radio frequency — typically 433MHz in the UK and Europe. For the receiver to respond to a button press, the fob must first be paired with the vehicle, meaning its unique remote ID has been registered to the vehicle's body control module (BCM) or central locking ECU.

This pairing can be lost in several ways: a battery change that interrupts power for long enough to clear the receiver's memory, a BCM replacement or software update that wipes the registered fob list, or in some cases simply a loss of synchronisation between the rolling code on the fob and the rolling code the receiver expects.

Re-pairing restores this registration. The procedure varies significantly by make and model — some vehicles have a manual re-pairing sequence using the ignition and door locks, while others require a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD-II port to write the fob's ID into the BCM directly. Ben carries the equipment to handle both approaches.

Why It Happens

Battery Change

Some vehicles lose fob pairing when battery power is interrupted. Reconnecting the battery can clear the receiver's registered fob list.

Why It Happens

BCM or Receiver Replacement

A new body control module starts with no fobs registered. Every fob — including ones that worked before — needs re-pairing to the replacement module.

Why It Happens

Rolling Code Sync Loss

Modern fobs use rolling encryption codes. Too many button presses out of range can push the code sequence beyond what the receiver accepts, requiring re-sync.

Diagnose First — Fix the Actual Problem

The instinct when a fob stops working is to assume it needs replacing entirely. Most of the time it does not. Ben diagnoses the specific fault before recommending anything — saving time and unnecessary cost.

FAQ

Key Fob Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions

The transponder and the remote are independent systems inside the same fob. If the key starts the engine but the buttons do not operate the central locking, the immobiliser side is fine — the fault is with the remote transmitter. Most common causes are a flat battery, lost pairing, or a damaged fob casing. A battery change is always worth trying first.
Possibly. Light moisture exposure — a brief soaking followed by drying — can often recover without permanent damage if the fob is dried out quickly. A wash-cycle or prolonged submersion that has corroded the circuit board is usually not repairable and requires a replacement fob. Ben will assess the damage on-site.
In most cases, a targeted repair is sufficient and significantly cheaper than a full key replacement. The only situations where a full new fob is needed are severe circuit damage, complete housing destruction, or internal chip failure. Ben diagnoses the specific fault before recommending either option.
Re-pairing registers the fob's remote ID to the vehicle's central locking receiver again. You need it if the fob has lost synchronisation — most often after a battery change, a BCM replacement, or a software update that cleared the registered fob list. The key may still start the car; only the buttons stop working.
Ben covers the vast majority of makes on UK roads. Remote re-pairing procedures vary significantly by manufacturer — some can be done with a manual ignition sequence, others require OBD diagnostic access to the BCM. Call or WhatsApp with your vehicle registration and he will confirm the approach.
If the fob is beyond repair, Ben can supply, cut and programme a replacement as a full key replacement job in the same visit. See Car Key Replacement for the complete service.
