Car Key Cutting Staffordshire
The blade of your key cut to the exact profile of your vehicle lock — on-site, at your location across Staffordshire. Ben also carries the programming equipment to pair it to your immobiliser in the same visit when needed.
What Key Cutting Actually Does — and What It Does Not
Key cutting is the process of shaping the metal blade of a new key to the exact profile of your vehicle's lock cylinder. Get it right and the key will turn the lock and ignition smoothly. Get it wrong by a fraction of a millimetre and it will not turn at all, or will feel stiff and wear the lock over time.
Here is what most people underestimate: for vehicles built after the late 1990s, cutting the blade is only half the job. Every modern car also requires the key's embedded transponder chip to be electronically registered to the vehicle's immobiliser before the engine will start — even if the cut is perfect. A key that has been cut but not programmed will turn the ignition but will not fire the engine.
Ben carries precision cutting equipment to every job, covering both standard profile keys and high-security laser-cut keys found on BMW, Mercedes, Audi and other European makes. He also carries the full programming toolkit — so in most cases, cutting and programming are completed in a single visit, at your location, anywhere across Staffordshire.
Two Different Steps — Both Required on Modern Vehicles
Two Types of Key Cutting Ben Covers
Standard Profile Cutting
The most common type — a serrated single or double-sided blade cut to the exact notch pattern that operates the lock pins inside your cylinder. Found on the majority of non-European vehicles and older models.
Laser-Cut (Track Cut) Keys
Found on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW and many other European vehicles. The groove runs down the centre of the blade rather than the edge — requiring specialist rotary cutting equipment not found in most general key shops. Ben carries this equipment to every job.
When Cutting Alone Is Enough — and When It Is Not
| Vehicle Type | Cutting Needed | Programming Needed | Result After Cutting Only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-1995 vehicles | Yes | No | Fully working key |
| Older mechanical key, no chip | Yes | No | Fully working key |
| Modern transponder key (1998+) | Yes | Yes | Turns lock, engine will not start |
| Remote key fob | Yes | Yes + remote pairing | Turns lock, engine will not start, remote fails |
| Laser-cut high-security key | Yes — specialist cutter | Yes | Turns lock, engine will not start |
🔍 Had a Key Cut but the Engine Will Not Start?
If your new key turns smoothly in the ignition but the car will not fire — and you see an immobiliser warning light on the dashboard — the key has been cut without being programmed to the transponder/immobiliser system.
This is a standalone programming job. See Car Key Programming for the full explanation, or call Ben directly and he can often complete the programming step on-site the same day.

When Key Cutting Is Part of the Job
Six scenarios where a blade needs cutting — and what else is usually needed alongside it.
Replacement Key — Cut and Programmed
The most common combined job. A new key is cut to the correct blade profile and programmed to the immobiliser in a single visit. See Car Key Replacement for the full service.
Spare Key — Cut and Programmed
Adding a second working key. The blade is cut to match the original and the transponder is added to the authorised key list alongside the existing key. See Spare Car Keys.
Already Have a Key Blank — Just Needs Cutting
If you have purchased a key blank or uncut shell and need only the blade profile cut, Ben can do this on-site without the full replacement service.
Laser-Cut Key for European Vehicle
BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen and many other European makes use track-cut blades. General key shops cannot cut these — Ben carries the specialist equipment needed.
Broken Blade — New Key Needed
If the blade has snapped and you need a physical replacement cut, this is often paired with extraction of the broken piece. See Broken Key Extraction if the piece is stuck.
Key Blank for Classic or Pre-1998 Vehicle
Older vehicles often use mechanical keys with no transponder. Cutting alone is usually the complete job — no programming step required.
Why Getting a Modern Car Key Cut in a Shop Often Does Not Work
High street key shops cut blades. Most of them cannot programme transponders — and for any vehicle built in the last 25 years, that means the key they hand you will turn the lock but refuse to start the engine. The customer then has to find a separate auto locksmith or dealer to complete the programming step, paying twice for what should be one job.
Cut and Programmed in One Visit
Cutting Only — Programming Not Available
The advantage of a mobile auto locksmith for key cutting is not just convenience — it is the combination of cutting and programming in a single callout. For any vehicle with an immobiliser (almost all vehicles on UK roads since 1998), a blade cut without the programming step is an incomplete job.
Vauxhall Vivaro 2022 — Key Cut and Programmed, Stoke ST4
A spare key cut and programmed in a single 30-minute visit.

Vauxhall Vivaro 2022
A customer wanted a spare key for their Vivaro van. Ben cut the blade to the correct profile on-site and used Zedfull Plus to programme the new key to the vehicle immobiliser — the full job completed in 30 minutes at the customer's location. The customer left with a fully working second key.
This illustrates the standard combined job: cutting and programming in a single visit. See Vauxhall coverage or Stoke-on-Trent service area.

What Staffordshire Customers Say
EXCELLENT Based on 65 reviews Posted on Google Matt KTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. AutoVault came to produce a spare key for my vehicle and programme a lost one out of the system. The service was exceptional and communication was excellent throughout. I was called before arrival (on time) and he did a stellar job. My vehicle posed several issues with the programming process and he went above and beyond to resolve this for me, perservering and having to come back the next day after some additional time and work was needed to complete the job which he did successfully. Extremely knowledgeable and professional, and a top guy! I cannot recommend this company highly enough. I will definitely use again in future.Posted on Google Nigel BirchTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were locked out our car at Alton Towers and had no other option but to Google for car locksmith. We tried the first one that came up and so glad we did! They came to us within 20 minutes, got us in the car quickly with no damage at all done to the car. Would 100% recommend if you are in the area. We are from Scotland so wasn't sure who to use but glad we used these guys.Posted on Google Helena BeareTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have a courtesy car and the key fob stopped working. The garage were shut for the whole weekend and I needed the use of a car. Ben was amazing and went over and beyond. He was very patient with me trying to identify where the emergency override was. . He then offered to come out and he arrived within 15 minutes. Bizarrely the key fob started to work as he pulled up. He still checked the fobs battery for me and showed me where the override on the car was. He refused to charge me the agreed call out charge. In fact he refused to charge me at all. If I could have given him 10 stars I would .Very knowledgeable and a gentleman. If you ever get locked out of your car definitely give Ben a callPosted on Google Nasser MansourTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ben was unbelievable!!
