How Is a Car Key Programmed to Your Car?
Every car sold in the UK since 1998 has an electronic immobiliser. When the key is turned or the start button is pressed, the engine control unit sends a radio signal to the key and expects a coded reply from the chip inside it, so with no match the engine stays off even when the blade turns perfectly. Ben programmes transponder keys, remote keys and keyless smart keys through the OBD port, the same diagnostic socket a garage uses, and the new key is added to the list of keys the car accepts.
Which Programming Method Does Your Car Need?
OBD Programming
The tool connects to the diagnostic port and adds the new key to the immobiliser. It is the most common method, quick and clean, and covers the majority of cars and vans on UK roads.
EEPROM Programming
Where the OBD port is not enough, the memory chip in the immobiliser module, body module or instrument cluster is read directly. Some BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen Group platforms need this.
PIN Code Programming

Key Cloning

The Key Was Cut but Never Programmed
A key cut at a shop or bought online turns the lock but has no identity in your immobiliser yet. The fix is a standalone programming job at the car.
The Key Lost Its Programming
On some cars a flat car battery, a jump start or work on the electrics leaves a key out of step with the car. The key is programmed to the immobiliser again, usually in minutes.
The Engine Starts but the Remote Does Nothing
Your chip is fine and the remote side has failed, which is most often the fob battery or a worn button. A new battery or a fob repair fixes it, and the remote is paired again where the car needs it.
The Immobiliser Light Keeps Flashing

The Key Will Not Turn at All
