Every Ford, from the Current Range to the Ones No Longer in Showrooms

Ford's UK line-up has changed significantly in recent years — the Fiesta, one of Britain's best-selling cars of all time, ended production in July 2023, and the Focus and Mondeo have also since been discontinued in favour of a smaller, more SUV and EV-focused range: Puma, Kuga, Ranger, and newer electric models. But discontinued doesn't mean gone — millions of Fiestas, Focuses and Mondeos remain on UK roads, and they still need keys cut, locks repaired and immobilisers programmed just as much as any current model.

Ford vehicles use the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) immobiliser across most of the range, along with KeyFree keyless entry on many current and recent models. Ben carries the specific diagnostic and programming equipment these systems require, covering every generation from older transponder-key Fiestas through to current keyless Puma and Kuga models.

For Ford Transit and Transit Custom commercial vehicles specifically, see the dedicated Ford Transit & Custom Locksmith page and the Ford Transit Ignition Barrel Specialist page for van-specific technical detail.

How Ford Key Security Works

PATS and KeyFree Explained

Ford has used its own-branded immobiliser and keyless entry systems across the range for decades, and knowing which one your vehicle has changes exactly how a lost-key or all-keys-lost job is approached.

🔐 PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System)

Ford's transponder-based immobiliser, standard across virtually every Ford built in the last two decades. A transponder chip in the key communicates with the PCM to authorise engine start — without a correctly programmed transponder, the engine will crank but not run.

📶 KeyFree Keyless Entry

Ford's proximity key system, fitted to most current Puma, Kuga and Ranger models and some later Focus and Fiesta variants. The key communicates wirelessly with the vehicle, allowing keyless locking, unlocking and push-button start.

🔍 A Note on Keyless Security

Keyless entry systems across the industry, including some Ford models, have been targeted by so-called "relay attack" theft methods in recent years. This is a well-documented, industry-wide issue rather than something specific to Ford, and manufacturers have introduced various countermeasures over successive model years. Ben can advise on additional physical security measures if you're concerned about your specific model.

Ford-Specific Programming Equipment

Ben carries dedicated programming tools covering PATS and KeyFree across the full Ford model range, current and discontinued alike.

FAQ

Ford Car Key & Locksmith — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Discontinued doesn't mean unsupported — millions of Fiestas, Focuses and Mondeos remain on UK roads, and Ben carries the equipment to cut and programme keys for these models just as readily as for current Ford vehicles.
PATS stands for Passive Anti-Theft System — Ford's transponder-based immobiliser, fitted across virtually every Ford built in the last two decades. It reads a chip in the key to authorise the engine to start; without a correctly programmed transponder, the engine will crank but not run.
KeyFree is Ford's keyless entry and start system, standard on most current Puma, Kuga and Ranger models and fitted to some later Focus and Fiesta variants. It allows keyless locking, unlocking and push-button start via a proximity key.
Yes. Ben recovers the vehicle and programmes a completely new key to the PATS immobiliser from scratch, on-site, covering the full Ford range.
In most cases, yes, using dedicated diagnostic access rather than requiring the original key to be present — call with your specific model and Ben will confirm the exact approach.
Some Ford models with keyless entry have, like many manufacturers' vehicles, been targeted by relay attack theft methods in recent years — this is an industry-wide issue rather than something unique to Ford. Ben can advise on additional physical security measures if you're concerned.
Yes, though Ford Transit and Transit Custom have their own dedicated pages given the depth of van-specific technical detail — see Ford Transit & Custom Locksmith and the Ford Transit Ignition Barrel Specialist page.
Ben diagnoses whether this is mechanical wafer wear or a PATS-related electrical fault before recommending a repair or replacement, keeping your existing key wherever the barrel condition allows it.
No. Ben confirms the full price for the job itself before attending, with no separate call-out fee regardless of model or fault type.
Yes. Broken key extraction is a regular callout on Ford vehicles, particularly higher-mileage Fiestas, Focuses and Transits. Ben extracts the fragment using specialist tools before cutting and programming a replacement if needed.
Ben covers Ford vehicles across Staffordshire — see the areas listed above, or the main Staffordshire page for full county-wide coverage.
