Spare Car Keys Cut & Programmed Staffordshire

A working spare key programmed to your vehicle on-site — the single cheapest insurance against a future lockout, lost key, or emergency. Most jobs done in under 30 minutes.

The Cheapest Insurance You'll Buy for Your Car

Most drivers only think about spare keys the day they do not have one — standing by the car with nothing in their pocket, or watching someone else drive away with the only set. Getting a spare cut and programmed while everything is still working costs a fraction of what an emergency replacement costs under pressure.

Ben cuts and programmes spare keys on-site across Staffordshire — the blade is cut to the correct profile for your lock, the transponder chip is registered to your vehicle's immobiliser, and remote central locking functions are paired where applicable. When Ben leaves, your spare works in every way the original does.

Most spare key jobs take under 30 minutes. Compared to the alternative — an all-keys-lost recovery from scratch — the difference in cost, time and stress is significant.

When to Get a Spare

Six Good Reasons to Get a Spare Key Now

All of them cheaper than an emergency callout later.

Bought a Used Car With One Key

Dealers and private sellers often hand over a single key with a used car. Getting a spare programmed straight away is far simpler and cheaper than waiting until that one key is lost.

Your Spare Has Gone Dead or Missing

You had a spare once, but the battery died, it was lost at some point, or you are not actually sure it still works. If you have not tested it recently, it may not be as reliable as you think.

Sharing a Vehicle Between Drivers

Two people regularly using the same car, or a family with teenagers who need access — a properly programmed spare prevents the key-swapping that almost always ends with someone locked out.

High-Value or Vulnerable Vehicle

If the car is expensive to replace or difficult to get off-road, losing the only key has a much higher cost. Motorhomes, classic vehicles, and commercial vans all benefit from a guaranteed backup.

Ahead of a Holiday or Trip

Leaving for a long drive with one set of keys and no backup is a specific kind of stress. Getting a spare cut before you go is a small job that takes away a real risk.

Peace of Mind — No Other Reason Needed

Sometimes the calculation is simple: one key means one point of failure. A spare means you never have to worry about it.

How a Spare Key Is Made

Not Just Cutting — Programming Too

🔑
A modern spare key has two components that both have to be correct: the physical blade, cut to the exact profile of your vehicle's lock, and the transponder chip inside the key head, registered to your immobiliser so the engine will start. A key that's only cut — or only has the chip added without blade cutting — will not fully work.

Ben uses your existing working key as the reference for both steps. The blade is measured or traced to produce an exact duplicate profile. The transponder is then programmed via your vehicle's OBD-II diagnostic port, adding the new key to the list of authorised keys without removing or affecting the original. Remote central locking buttons, where present, are paired at the same time.

Why the Original Key Has to Be Present

Adding a spare to a working immobiliser is a trust-based process — the existing key being present effectively authorises the addition of a new one. Without at least one working key, the job becomes an all-keys-lost recovery, which uses a different and more complex procedure. See Lost Car Keys if you have no working spare at all.

Equipment Used

Ben carries AUTEL, Xhorse Key Tool Plus, Zedfull Plus and other specialist programming tools covering the vast majority of UK vehicles — cars, vans, and commercial vehicles. Coverage can be confirmed before attending by calling with your registration number.

The Cost Comparison

Spare Key Now vs Emergency Replacement Later

The same job — getting a working key programmed for your vehicle — costs considerably less when it is planned in advance. An emergency all-keys-lost recovery is more complex, takes longer, and typically costs more than adding a spare alongside an existing working key.

⚠️ Emergency Later

All Keys Lost — Under Pressure

The gap narrows on complex vehicles, but the principle holds across most makes: a spare key programmed now will cost less — in time, money and stress — than waiting until it is an emergency. Ben confirms the full price before attending, with no separate call-out fee on top.

A commercial customer who planned ahead, rather than waiting for an emergency.

Spare Key — Planned

Ford Transit 2022

📍 Ashbourne, DE6  ·  ⏱ 30 minutes  ·  🔧 AUTEL

A customer who had recently bought a van for his company came to Ben to get a spare key cut and programmed before he needed one. Using AUTEL, Ben programmed a new key on-site in 30 minutes — the customer left with a fully working spare key and the peace of mind that a lockout wouldn't stop his working day.

This is exactly the kind of job that costs a fraction of an emergency all-keys-lost recovery. See the Ford coverage page or commercial locksmith services for more.

Making the Most of Your Spare

Where to Keep It So It's Actually Useful

A spare key only helps when it is somewhere genuinely accessible — not in the same bag as your main key.

01

Trusted Person, Different Location

A family member, partner or neighbour with a separate set of keys you can reach by phone is the most reliable backup. Works even if you are stranded somewhere unfamiliar.

02

Not in the Same Bag

Storing both keys together means losing one bag loses both. They need to live in genuinely separate places — drawer at home, key hook at work, or with someone else entirely.

03

Test It Before You Store It

Before filing the spare away, test it in the lock and ignition and confirm central locking works. Ben tests everything before finishing the job — but it is worth checking once more when you get home.

04

Replace the Battery Periodically

Remote key fob batteries typically last 2–3 years. A dead fob battery on the spare is not the same as a dead key — the transponder still works for ignition — but the remote buttons will not. Replace it before you actually need it.
