Land Rover Discovery 2016 — All Keys Lost in Stafford

How a Stafford customer was back on the road in 40 minutes after losing his only key — with the spare already out of action.

When a customer in Stafford lost his only working key to his 2016 Land Rover Discovery, he assumed the worst — a tow to the dealer, days of waiting, and a bill running into the thousands. His spare key had stopped working some time before, so when the main key went missing, he was left with no way to start the car at all.

This is one of the most common situations Ben deals with: all keys lost, no working spare, and a vehicle that won't start without one. For many people, the instinct is to call the manufacturer or book a recovery truck to the nearest main dealer. With AutoVault, that step usually isn't necessary.

What Happens When You Lose All Your Keys

Modern Land Rovers, like most vehicles built in the last 15 years, use an immobiliser system that only allows the engine to start when it reads a valid programmed key nearby. When every working key is lost, the vehicle has no way to verify a key exists at all — which means a brand-new key has to be created and registered to the car's security system from scratch.

This requires specialist key programming equipment that can communicate directly with the vehicle's immobiliser and write new key data to it. Without that equipment, the only other route is usually a main dealer, who will often need to order parts, book a multi-day appointment, and charge significantly more than an independent specialist.

How Ben Resolved It On-Site

Ben attended the customer's location in Stafford and used ACDP — one of the dealer-grade diagnostic tools he carries on every job — to access the Discovery's immobiliser system directly. From there, he was able to programme and cut two new keys on the spot: one to replace the lost original, and a second spare, so the customer wouldn't find himself in the same position again.

The whole job — diagnosis, programming and cutting two keys — took 40 minutes, start to finish, on the customer's driveway. No tow truck, no dealer booking, no days off work waiting for a courtesy car.

This is a good example of why having the right equipment on-site matters. A standard locksmith without vehicle-specific key programming tools simply can't resolve an all-keys-lost situation — the job needs equipment capable of talking directly to the car's security system, which is exactly what Ben carries to every callout across Staffordshire.

What to Do If You're In This Situation

  • Don't assume a dealer is your only option — most all-keys-lost jobs can be resolved on-site by a properly equipped auto locksmith
  • Have your vehicle's registration number ready when you call, so coverage can be confirmed quickly
  • If you're not actually locked out (the car is accessible, just won't start), let the locksmith know — it can sometimes mean a faster job
  • Consider asking for a spare key while the technician is already there — it's almost always cheaper than a second emergency callout later

If you've lost all your keys to a Land Rover, or any other vehicle, across Staffordshire, see the Lost Car Keys service page for full details, or call directly for an immediate response.
